► A quick and dirty explanation:
Alan was able to survive and navigate the horrors of the Dark Place by utilizing visions as inspiration to push his story forward. Some were Alan using pieces of what makes a good story, while others were little snippets and glimpses into other people's lives that he was able to twist and use. The barge is a far cry from the Dark Place but since it's full of stories and characters Alan will still be able to tap into this ability to see these echoes on occasion. All he has to do is line up a few points of light that manifest for him and he can essentially eavesdrop on people!
What he'll actually see varies. It can be two people having a conversation. It could be an internal monologue. It might even be a warped interpretation of what actually happened.
► Mechanics in-game:
- Echoes can be anything, so long as they're relevant to your character: a navelgazing moment between them and their crush in canon, an argument with another character in the hallway of the barge, helpful advice as a fleeting thought. Anything's on the table - if you have a life from a breach you want Alan to be aware of, for example, it's fair game!
- The laws of drama and a good story apply: this isn't an exact science. Alan's subconscious can easily dial up the drama and change the tone for a better hook. It has to contain a grain of truth, but things can still get jumbled. If you want to mix it up, let me know and we'll coordinate.
- These are just small snippets of feeling, not whole memories. Alan will not be able to go into your dreams or witness an entire conversation or anything like that. Just a few juicy tidbits!
- Alan will be writing all of these down as he sees them where they will remain in his cabin. This is for his eyes only. If there is some sort of plot involving these pages getting stolen down the line, I'll contact folks beforehand and offer an opt out, etc.
- Alan will only see echoes around floods and ports for the time being. As he gains more balance/reaches enlightenment the closer he is to graduation, he'll be able to see them more frequently.
- This is entirely opt-in - by default, I'm going to assume people don't want Alan accidentally prying into your character's life, but comment here if you're into it and we can set things up.

Echo information: 1) Father-son drama. Alan is welcome to snippets from their various arguments. Particularly dramatic moments include Stepan basically disowning him by hysterically yelling "I curse you in my name from now on and for evermore!" He can also get Pyotr yelling (distortion, Pyotr was always calm and devil may care during these arguments but to add to the drama-) about being "sent by post" as a child, forced to live in poverty (distortion; he never lived in poverty but, again, DRAMA) and raised by cruel strangers (distortion, they were strangers, but not particularly cruel-) while Stepan lived in luxury... and then gambled away what was supposed to be Pyotr's inheritance that was left to him by his deceased mother.
2) Gay drama. Pyotr's dramatic declaration of love: "You are beautiful! . . . You are the sun, and I am your worm." The reality is that Pyotr is basically a stalker saying crazy stuff to someone who has no interest in him at this point, but Alan can get only the... intensity... of Pyotr's devotion to this... individual... and make of it what he will, as a writer in search of inspiration.

As a note, the moment Alan's ability hooks into any of YZ's memories, he will notice. He won't exactly care, but he may end up knocking on his door to talk to him about it.
+ a field of strange alien grasses that glow in colors human eyes cannot see in a place that is deep underground. there's strange butterflies that glitter like glass and a hum of insects and he will hear someone singing but the words were never made by any human tongue - almost sounds like a whale song of some kind.
+ nuclear winter scenario - sky is black, everyone is dressed in pre-bronze age gear, a lot of fighting

Echo information: Hoo boy, there is SO much to choose from here...one question is, would you be willing to have Alan run across snippets of memories that are themselves already distorted/clashing? For instance, he might get two memories of the same event that go differently superimposed on top of each other, or scenes that seem "glitchy," or memories that are super disjointed and fuzzy due to mako poisoning. I'll put three suggestions here, but since you're canon-familiar, if you have any ideas for other things that could be fun, just lmk! I'm good with anything.
1. Any part of the infamous Nibelheim incident, of course. Could be Cloud's self-insert fanfic version, the actual version, or some combo of the two.
2. Aerith's death, OG style.
3. Cloud adopts Denzel; there's not actually much of this scene that Cloud was actually present for, but I figure maybe the echoes could either give Alan some context or...make some up XD the important thing really is the emotions attached to it, could even be snippets of various moments with Cloud and Denzel to get that across.

All the while, in the back of his mind, he knows he's the reason why this man, why Sam Lambert is dying in the first place. He killed the man he's trying to save.

3. On a full stage, two girls fight. One of the girls is always Nana, but the other shifts between all of her classmates. Nana fights viciously, in her revue outfit, two swords in hand, cutting off a small pin on every one of her classmate's outfits, as their cloak falls to the floor again and again and again. This echo feels like it could take fifty seconds or fifty years.

Pretty distorted by clashing whispers, screams, and signs of a woman that looks like Aerith- close but not exactly- with over laying of needles, tubes, and a child's hand against glass, facing what looks like a lab. There's people, mostly men, in white lab coats walking by.
"An ancient" "A cetra" these are the two clearest phrases, whispered over and over until it becomes white noise.

Echo information: She's got a semi-comprehensive history writeup (and honestly her relevant history is a conga line of weird & often awful things happening to or around her, as vampires do), but that's also 4.5k words, so here's some options she's sensitive about.
CW on the first one for body horror, abuse, and assault.
- A dark closet that's become almost their entire world. Ashton was in love before this, but they don't have the choice not to be anymore. They can't get themself to kill the way their creator wants them to, which means punishment: nights without fingers, without a mouth; the vampiric body is a lot more durable than a human body & their sire is an expert at fleshcrafting, an expert in suffering. Nights of hell are blurring into each other. Nothing they do is good enough, their body doesn't belong to them and that's been made very clear; if their nerve keeps breaking he'll kill them and oh, god, they don't want to die.
- A busy nightclub. Ashton's not human at the time -- something small, hidden. A sense of distressed certainty: these people are all going to die, they're going to be sacrifices; she has to do something, she can't let this happen -- and making the wrong choice off that impulse. Something metal heats, shatters, and its contents catch fire, and suddenly the whole place is going up in a blaze. Unmitigated horror: Ash didn't want anything like this. She was trying to help. It was an accident. But she has to get out of here, or she's going to burn too -- when she's watching it from the outside, something in her soul is going numb with icy inhuman calm, some instinctual predator's certainty. She knows this was so distressing just a few minutes ago, but it's all just... quiet.
- FREE SPACE. Nice things have happened to him but they're less interesting.
